Synopsis
Repiblik is a social media project documenting the present efforts of Haitians at home and abroad who defiantly choose to fight for the future of their country. Their stories of life, love, and patriotism are intermingled with a mélange of portraits of the Haitian people who tell the stories of Haiti's past, present, and future.
Much of the documentaries and media coverage of Haiti center on the oft repeated phrase, "the poorest country in the western hemisphere." The point of view is U.S. based, talks about Haitians, dwells on the intensely negative, and leaves viewers with a sense of hopelessness. In contrast, Repiblik channels the voices of individuals and their stories, focuses exclusively on interviewees of Haitian descent, and documenting what Haitians are doing to help their own country-part of a growing movement of patriotism coupled with action.
We believe a movement is taking place now. a revolution, as interviewee Lolo Reagan says, "not of people taking up arms, but a revolution of education." Repiblik is capturing this movement as it grows, from thought to action, sparked and spurred by visionary individuals overcoming their personal struggles and external obstacles to begin down a path of change.
